Lagos Records 3 Accidents, 3 Deaths In One Day

Lagos, the commercial hub of Nigeria, witnessed three harrowing accidents yesterday, resulting in three fatalities and several others seriously injured. The accidents were attributed to brake failure.

The first incident occurred in the Epe area of the state, involving a Dangote truck, a tricycle, and a stationary Toyota commercial bus. The Dangote truck, while descending a slope, experienced brake failure, causing it to collide with the tricycle and the stationary bus before veering into a nearby market. The accident claimed the lives of two students and an adult male.

The second and third accidents took place at Abule-Egba and Tsunami Bridge, inward Ketu, respectively. In these incidents, at least five people were severely injured and rushed to the hospital for medical attention.




Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), confirmed the accidents, describing them as harrowing.

According to Taofiq, the first accident at Ayeyoro, Epe, involved a Dangote truck (DCG-TM-028) that experienced a critical brake failure while descending from Ita-Opo. The out-of-control vehicle collided with a tricycle (Marwa AGL 442 QC) and a stationary Toyota Camry at the Ayeyoro traffic light before veering into the Ayetoro Market Complex. The unfortunate collision resulted in the fatalities of the tricycle driver and two students from Manpower Technical School.




In a separate incident at Ijaye, inward Abule-Egba, an accident involving an LT Bus (FKJ 762 AD) and a Toyota Hiace Bus (MUS 154 YE) was also attributed to brake system failure. LASTMA personnel acted swiftly, extricating the driver and two passengers, who were then urgently conveyed to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

Additionally, LASTMA officers successfully rescued three individuals, two females and one male, from a multi-vehicle collision at Tsunami Bridge, inward Ketu. This accident, involving two Volkswagen commercial buses (LSD 483 CT & AGL 267) and a 10-tyre DAF truck, left the victims with varying degrees of injuries.




LASTMA's General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, has emphasized the importance of vehicle maintenance, particularly the braking systems, and urged all motorists to ensure their vehicles are in optimal condition before embarking on any journey. Regular maintenance checks are crucial to preventing such calamitous incidents and preserving lives.
