The Integrity Youth Alliance, an organisation that has been monitoring the development trends in the Nigeria Police Force for over 15 years, has said that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) don’t have any reason to clash over the enforcement of the digitalised Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) in the country.

Reacting to a publication in an online medium, the Chairman, of the board of trustees of the Alliance, Adewole Kehinde said that all over the World, cases of car theft are reported to the Police and this is backed by Section 4 of the Police Acts and Regulations which lists the duties of the police force to include: The prevention and detection of crime. The apprehension of offenders. The preservation of law and order.

“The evolution of vehicular crimes in the digital age demands a modernised and expanded approach, therefore, the Nigeria police revitalisation of the CMR by introducing digitalisation to align with the realities of contemporary policing, Adewole said.

The statement read further, “The Law is very clear on the duty of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) which includes preventing or minimizing accidents on the highway. Clearing obstructions on any part of the highways. Educating drivers, motorists and other members of the public generally on the proper use of the highways. Designing and producing the driver’s license to be used by various categories of vehicle operators.

The digitalisation of the Central Motor Registry by the Nigeria Police will bring several significant advantages and benefits for the general public as citizens can now have greater confidence in the security of their vehicles, with the digital CMR in place. The availability of accurate and real-time vehicle information will assist in preventing and quickly resolving vehicular crimes, ensuring that citizens’ valuable assets are protected.

“Also, the Police will be better equipped to enforce motor vehicle-related laws, including registration and licensing. This will lead to safer roads and improved traffic management, ultimately benefiting all road users.

“The comprehensive database of motor vehicles will act as a deterrent to potential criminals who might intend to use vehicles for illegal activities. The knowledge that law enforcement has access to accurate information, can discourage criminal behaviour.

“Also, in cases involving accidents or disputes related to motor vehicles, the digital CMR will expedite investigations, providing swift resolutions and reducing inconvenience for citizens.

Above all, maintaining accurate vehicular information significantly will contribute to national security as it will ensure that vehicles associated with criminal activities can be tracked and addressed promptly, bolstering overall security efforts.

“We urge members of the public to cooperate with the Nigeria police as the eCMR platform will provide motor vehicle information for robust and proactive actions. This is particularly in crime prevention, detection, investigation, prosecution, and efforts made at enhancing national security,” the statement stated.
