How Taskforce Chairman, Akerele stopped epidemic outbreak in Lagos
The recent seizure of cartons of contaminated and expired turkey by operatives of the Nigerian Customs in Lagos was a perfect platform for criminally minded persons to attempt to spread a state wide epidemic that would have killed their fellow Nigerians.
The criminals somehow had access to some cartons of the expired turkey and attempted to inject them into the market for public consumption.
Had the 'killer cartons of turkey' entered the market, Lagosians would be facing another serious epidemic and health challenges, aside from the gripping effect of Cholera devastating the country.
However, the effective network of information gathering and inter-agency relationship put in place by CSP Tayo Akerele, Chairman, Lagos State Taskforce and Sanitation Agency, he was tipped off the theft of cartons of turkey likely to find its way into the Lagos market.
In a proactive move, Akerele mobilized his operatives and swooped on the criminals in their enclave.
Several cartons of the expired turkey were recovered and suspects arrested.
CSP Akerele disclosed the health implications had the product found its way into the market.
"It would have caused serious health challenges for the consumers, beside an outbreak of various ailments such as lung and heart diseases, breathing difficulties, stroke, stooling and a multiple of sicknesses associated with ingesting poisonous, contaminated and expired foods or products," he disclosed.
He went, " its negative health complications would had more terrifying effects on kids. Imagine a family of six who ate rice and stew cooked with the expired turkey, all falling sick with an undisclosed ailments."
The Taskforce chairman, CSP Akerele cautioned Lagosians to be wary of the places they purchase consumables and take note of the shop, stall, store or place they did the purchase, in case of any eventuality.
He solicited for the support of members of the public and urge them to report any infraction to his office.
"I run an open door policy, I see everyone that comes to my office to see me and very well disposed to changing Lagos to that of our dream through public cooperation and partnership," he said.
