In effort to bring order back to the streets and ensure smooth traffic flow, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confiscated 25 commercial and 15 private vehicles that were operating illegal garages and causing significant road obstructions in the areas of Oyingbo, Ijora, and Idumota in Lagos. This operation was carried out under the leadership of LASTMA Head of Enforcement Mr. Kayode Odunuga, following instructions from the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa. The crackdown specifically targeted unlawful garages that have been a persistent source of traffic congestion and inconvenience for residents and commuters.
The Special Adviser confirmed that this recent impoundment exercise is part of a broader initiative by the Lagos State Government to improve the efficiency of the city's transportation network. Hon. Sola Giwa emphasized the government's dedication to upholding law and order on the roads by strictly enforcing all traffic regulations. He highlighted that illegal garages have posed a significant challenge to maintaining smooth traffic flow in Lagos and that these impoundments serve as a stern warning to offenders that the state will not tolerate actions that disrupt public order and jeopardize citizens' safety.
The targeted areas, Oyingbo, Ijora, and Idumota, are well-known for traffic congestion caused by unauthorized parking and makeshift garages, which not only hinder vehicle movement but also pose risks to pedestrians. LASTMA's intervention aims to clear these bottlenecks and improve the overall traffic situation in these critical zones. Residents and business owners have voiced their approval of the government's actions, acknowledging the positive impact it will have on their daily routines.
LASTMA has assured the public that this operation will continue and expand to other parts of the city where illegal garages and associated activities are prevalent. Hon. Giwa urged all vehicle owners and operators to comply with the state's traffic regulations and collaborate with authorities to avoid penalties. He reaffirmed that the government's main objective is to create a safer and more organized environment for all road users.
Additionally, motorists were encouraged to take responsibility for the roads and promptly report any broken down or abandoned trailers or trucks to LASTMA via the Agency's hotlines: 08100565860 / 08129928503.
