The termination of Sanda's employment at EKEDC, effective immediately from April 17, 2024, was a result of recent controversies, including allegations of corruption and falsification of academic credentials. Sanda, who became the third woman to lead a major Nigerian electricity distribution company in March 2022, had her tenure cut short after an internal investigation prompted by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). The investigation led to the suspension of all WPG staff seconded to EKEDC as part of an effort to ensure direct employment and accountability within the utility.

In a letter from Charles Momoh, chairman of WPG, Sanda was informed that her services were no longer required, citing compliance with the termination clause in her contract. The company also provided Sanda with three months' salary in lieu of notice.

The situation was further complicated by revelations regarding Sanda's academic claims. It was discovered that she falsely stated that she held degrees from prestigious institutions such as Harvard Business School and the University of Edinburgh. Investigations confirmed that Sanda had only attended a short executive education course at Harvard, contrary to her claims of a full academic degree. The University of Edinburgh also clarified that she was not an alumna, raising further concerns about her educational background.

The most concerning discovery was related to Sanda's alleged PhD from the non-existent University of Management Science and Technology in the Benin Republic. Investigations revealed that the university was unaccredited and had no online presence, except for an Instagram account.

This scandal has had a negative impact on EKEDP's management and operations, prompting an urgent review of internal controls and employment procedures. The NERC has emphasized the importance of transparency and direct employment practices to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Stakeholders and EKEDP customers are demanding strict oversight and integrity in leadership positions within the power sector to protect consumer interests and ensure the delivery of reliable services.
