The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that approximately 1.8 million candidates will participate in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, scheduled to take place from April 30 to June 24, 2024. Dr. Josiah Dangut, Head of Nigeria National Office, revealed that 22,229 schools registered for the examination, with 902,328 male and 912,016 female candidates. This reflects a 10.6% increase compared to last year's figure.

In an effort to enhance security and efficiency, the registration process now includes the National Identification Number (NIN) as mandated by the Federal Government. To ensure a smooth and secure examination, additional security measures have been implemented in volatile areas, including the deployment of security personnel, the use of metal detectors, and the monitoring of centers through CCTV cameras.

Dr. Dangut cautioned candidates and schools against engaging in examination malpractice, emphasizing that those found guilty would face severe penalties such as result cancellation, expulsion, and prosecution. The council has undertaken various nationwide awareness campaigns, including radio and television jingles, social media initiatives, and seminars for school proprietors, principals, students, and other stakeholders. These efforts aim to educate participants on the detrimental effects of examination malpractice, such as the erosion of academic integrity and the devaluation of certificates.

After the completion of the last paper, the results will be released within 45 days. Furthermore, certificates will be printed and issued to schools in less than 90 days, accompanied by digital copies accessible on the Digital Certificate platform. This innovation ensures the authenticity and security of certificates, mitigating the risks of fraud and forgery. In addition, the council has introduced the "WAEC Result Checker," enabling candidates to verify their results online using their examination numbers and NIN. This feature aims to reduce incidents of result falsification and facilitate a convenient and secure means of accessing results for candidates.
