GOVERNOR ADELEKE ORDERS INVESTIGATION INTO REPORT OF YOUNG MAN SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR STEALING A FOWL

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has ordered a full investigation into the case of a young man reportedly sentenced to death by hanging for stealing a fowl. The governor has also directed the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice to initiate the process of granting prerogative of mercy to the young man.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Governor Adeleke emphasized his commitment to justice and fairness, stating, “Osun is a land of justice and equity, and we must ensure fairness and protection of the sanctity of lives.”

He assured the public that the case had his direct attention and promised a swift and urgent response.

The reported judgment has sparked public outrage, with many Nigerians taking to social media to criticize the perceived disparity in the justice system. Some commentators called for an investigation into the actions of the judge or magistrate who handed down the sentence.

One commenter said, “It is appalling that a judge/magistrate could give such a ruling on such an offence. The Nigeria Judicial Council (NJC) should investigate the magistrate/judge who pronounced this verdict and review all concluded cases under their name.”

Another commentator drew attention to alleged selective justice, pointing out that while ordinary citizens face harsh punishments for petty crimes, high-profile individuals accused of misappropriating public funds walk free. “Sentenced to death for stealing a fowl, while Yahaya Bello, who stole over a hundred billion Naira, is walking free? Nigeria’s judiciary is the enemy of Nigerians,” the user wrote.

The case has reignited calls for judicial reform and a review of sentencing guidelines, with critics arguing that the justice system often punishes the poor while shielding the wealthy and powerful.

Governor Adeleke’s intervention has been widely welcomed, with many urging him to pursue justice not only in this case but also in other similar cases of judicial excess. The governor assured citizens that the matter would be handled with urgency and fairness.
