A 35-year old man, Segun Kalejaye, has landed in trouble for allegedly impersonating and forging Mushin Local Government tickets and using them to extort money from motorcycle operators on the road before he was caught.
The suspect, Segun Kalejaye, has been charged for conduct likely to cause breach of public peace, forgery and impersonation under the Criminal Laws of the State.
The incident happened at LUTH Junction in Mushin area of the State, where the suspect and others now at large were caught issuing the tickets to motorcycle operators and extorting money from them.
Trouble started for the suspect after he accosted a dispatch motorcycle rider and was forcing the rider to take the ticket and pay him money, which led to exchange of words and interrogation that eventually exposed him.
The matter was reported to the Police at Area D Command in Mushin. The suspect was arrested and detained at the Command for interrogation over his alleged conduct.
During interrogation, the Police discovered that he was not a Council worker and had forged the ticket booklets, which he used to extort money from operators. He was subsequently charged before the Isolo Magistrate Court for the alleged offence.
The charges read:
“That you, Segun Kalejaye ‘m’ of No. 49, Ogungbaye Street, Mushin and others at large on 17h of September, 2024 at LUTH Junction, Mushin, in the Lagos State magisterial district, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit impersonation and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria 2015.”
Count II:-“That you, Segun Kalejaye ‘m’ of same address, and others at large of same date and place in the aforementioned Magisterial district, did conduct yourselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by apprehending a dispatch motorcycle without you being a regulated authority by the government and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 168(d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria 2015.”
Count III:-“That you, Segun Kalejaye ‘m’ of same address and others at large of same date and place in the aforementioned Magisterial district, did impersonate to be a staff of Mushin Local Government in order to extort from a dispatch rider one Badmus Damilola ‘m’ and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 78 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria 2015.”
Count IV:-“That you, Segun Kalejaye ‘m’ of same address, and others at large of same date and place in the aforementioned Magisterial district, did forge Mushin Local Government Okada sticker and being in possession of it and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 365 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria 2015.”
He pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Inspector Solomon, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O.I. Williams, granted him bail with two sureties, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses will be verified by the Court.
The matter was adjourned for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody at the correctional center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
