Reuben Abati's comments on the purchase of land in Igbo land have sparked diverse reactions. On a recent episode of Arise Television's 'The Morning Show', the journalist and former presidential spokesman suggested that Igbos in Nigeria's southeast region do not sell land to non-indigenous people.
Abati shared a story recounted by Theophilus Benson, a former government official, who mentioned that Igbos do not usually sell land to outsiders during a public event at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs. Benson shared his personal experience of facing this issue when trying to buy land in Igbo land for his wife and daughter.
The discussion highlighted the complexities of ethnicity and land ownership in Nigeria, pointing out the contrast between Igbos excelling in various parts of the country but being hesitant to sell land to non-Igbos, even as in-laws.
Abati's remarks stirred a mix of reactions on social media, with some agreeing with his perspective while others criticized him for addressing such a sensitive ethnic issue.
