The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has denied allegations of partisanship in the Rivers State local government elections, emphasizing that its actions were guided by a Federal High Court order.
According to Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, the NPF received three court orders regarding the elections.
The first, issued on July 19, 2024, barred the police from participating in the election, deeming it unlawful.
A counter-order from the Rivers State High Court on September 4, 2024, directed the police to provide security.
However, the Federal High Court nullified all previous activities related to the election on September 30, 2024, and ordered the police to stay away.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, directed the Rivers State Police Command to abide by the Federal High Court’s ruling and communicated this to the Governor of Rivers State via a letter dated October 2, 2024.
The NPF condemned the Executive Governor of Rivers State’s verbal attack on the IGP and emphasized its commitment to maintaining law and order, upholding democratic principles, and fostering peace and unity.
