The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, CP Joseph Eribo, convened a meeting on Thursday, 3rd October, 2024 with the leadership of the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) and representatives from all political parties participating in the upcoming Local Government Elections scheduled for Saturday, 5th October, 2024.
The purpose of the meeting was to emphasize the importance of maintaining peace and order during the election. It took place at the Conference room of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command in Ikot Akpanabia.
CP Eribo emphasized the necessity for all political parties to prioritize peace and unity, avoid conflicts and violence. He assured that the Police and other security agencies overseeing the election will provide maximum security and ensure fairness to all individuals regardless of their political affiliations. He encouraged political actors to view the election as a friendly competition and not a matter of life and death. The CP also urged political parties to cooperate with security agencies to ensure a smooth election process. He called on AKISIEC to maintain neutrality and treat all parties equally.
Elder Aniedi Ikoiwak, Chairman of AKISIEC, expressed gratitude to CP Eribo for the invitation and for his message to political parties and AKISIEC. He pledged that AKISIEC would conduct the election fairly and impartially, providing equal treatment to all parties. He appreciated the security agencies for ensuring safety and affirmed AKISIEC's commitment to organizing a transparent, free, and fair election on Saturday, 5th October, 2024.
The highlight of the gathering was the signing of a Peace Accord by all political parties present, signifying their commitment to peaceful participation in the electoral process.
