Nationwide blackout strikes again as power grid fails

Story by Iyiola Ayomide

On October 14, 2024, Nigeria's national power grid collapsed once more, leaving millions in darkness.

The failure occurred around 6:48 PM, with electricity generation plummeting from 3.87 gigawatts to zero shortly after.

Distribution companies, including the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company and Abuja Disco, confirmed the outage and are working to restore power.

This incident marks the eighth collapse of the grid this year, exacerbating ongoing electricity supply challenges across the country.

“Dear Valued Customer,” Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), which serves some parts of Lagos State said on its X handle:

“Kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 18:48hrs, which has resulted in a loss of power supply across our network. We are currently working with our partners as we hope for speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as the power supply is restored. Kindly bear with us.”

A spokesperson for the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC), Emeka Ezeh, noted that as a result of the collapse, the five South East states in its area of coverage are out of power supply.

He said:”Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) wishes to inform her esteemed customers of a general system collapse that occurred at 18:48 hours today, 14th October, 2024. This has resulted in the loss of supply currently being experienced across EEDC network.

“Consequently, due to this development, all our interface TCN stations are out of supply, and we are unable to provide services to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states.

“We are on standby awaiting detailed information of the collapse and restoration of supply from the National Control Centre (NCC), Osogbo.”
