The Joint Action Committee (JAC), which represents the non-teaching staff unions in Nigerian universities, has directed its members to begin a nationwide indefinite strike on Monday. This decision comes after the government failed to pay the four months of withheld salaries owed to the union members.
The JAC comprises the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU). The circular informing the strike was jointly signed by the General-Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, and the President of SSANU, Mohammed Ibrahim, and was issued in Abuja on Sunday.
The circular noted that despite President Bola Tinubu's approval to pay 50% of the withheld four months' salaries, none of the union members have received any payment. The JAC has issued multiple notices to the government in the past, but the sincerity of the government's efforts to address the issue is in doubt.
As a result, the JAC leadership has decided to commence the indefinite strike at midnight on Sunday, October 27, 2024, to allow the branch officers of NASU to be in place before the strike begins. This strategic timing change is to ensure effective coordination and alignment between the two unions.
The circular expressed the JAC's deepest appreciation for the unwavering commitment of its members and reiterated the determination to persist in this struggle until the ultimate victory is secured.
