The event was presided over by AIG Ogundele Ayodeji, psc+, and attended by officers and personnel from the FCID, highlighting the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to addressing gender-based violence.

The keynote presentation was delivered by Force Pathologist, ACP (Dr.) Samuel Keshinro, who spoke on “Measuring Gender-Related Killing of Women and Girls (Femicides) in Lagos State: Recommendations for Data Systems Improvements, Advocacy, and Action.”

Dr. Keshinro emphasized the urgent need for improved data collection methods to accurately assess the scope of femicides, referencing the International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS) developed by the United Nations to ensure consistency and comparability in crime statistics globally.

In his presentation, Dr. Keshinro highlighted alarming statistics from the Spotlight Initiative, a UN program focused on ending violence against women and girls, which reveals that one in three women face sexual, physical, and psychological abuse, including trafficking and violence linked to harmful social norms. He explained that gender-based violence, particularly Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), significantly impacts women, often perpetrated by intimate partners, and culminates in femicides, the intentional killing of a woman or girl motivated by gender.

The lecture aimed to raise awareness and provide training for police personnel, addressing the statistical gaps in femicides reporting and fostering a robust framework for measuring such incidents within the Nigeria Police Force and relevant agencies. The initiative seeks to enhance policymaking in combatting gender-based violence and provide comparable data for international reference.

AIG Ogundele Ayodeji commended ACP Keshinro for his insightful presentation, urging detectives at the FCID Annex Lagos to incorporate the knowledge gained into their investigative practices. He stressed the importance of intelligence-led policing in effectively addressing and mitigating the impact of gender-based violence in society.
