LAGOS-INDICATIONS have emerged that the Commissioner of Police CP Olatunji Disu of the Rivers State Police Command was moved to the Federal Capital Territory Command Abuja for his perceived closeness to the incumbent Governor of the state, Timi Fubara. CP Disu was deployed to Rivers State Command last year as the substantive Commissioner of Police of the state when the senseless turf war for supremacy between Nyesom Wike the present Minister of FCT and Timi Fubara, the incumbent Governor peaked.
Impeccable Police source informed that the Minister of the FCT who was the immediate past Governor of the state, was not comfortable with the incumbent’s donation of 100 operational patrol vehicles to the police which was received by CP Disu two weeks ago. It was gathered that Wike had confided on the Inspector-General of Police IGP Kayode Egbetokun that by donating vehicles to the police which was received by CP Disu, chances are that the police would work for the Governor against his interest in the forthcoming local government elections slated for October 5, 2024. The source added that the FCT minister boasted before the IGP that he was capable of buying three times the number of vehicles donated by Governor Fubara if CP Disu was redeployed to Abuja and a replacement to Rivers State Police Command done.
In the meantime, the IGP by wanting to remain in the good book of the FCT Minister and by extension, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to actualize his tenure extension bid, had to remove CP Disu and replaced him with the Commissioner of Police Delta State, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda while CP Peter Opara who is more of a sacrificial lamb was again, redeployed to Delta State Police command to replace Abaniwonda. However, it the midst of this, the source informed that when the Governor called CP Disu that he would be donating patrol vehicles for the police, he promptly informed the IGP who inturns asked him to go ahead and receive them adding that the vehicles were for the Nigeria Police Force NPF and not for any individual. While working as the helmsman of the state police Command in the wake of the crisis between Nyesom Wike and Gov Timi Fubara CP Disu was said to have maintained neutral posture.
He was quoted as saying, he was in the state primarily to ensure the safety of lives and property and not get involved in politics saying that both Wike and Fubara are brothers who cam settle their differences anytime. “If I pitch my tent with one person against the other today, what if they settle their fight tomorrow as brothers, where will I hide my face,” he told journalists.
On the other hand, CP Peter Opara upon his promotion last year, was deployed to Osun State Command but some powerful politicians reportedly petitioned the IGP that the CP was an Igbo man, the Governor has an Igbo mother and wife and stressed that the senior policeman would ordinarily be doing the bidding of the Governor. Quickly and acting on the strength of the petition, the IGP moved CP Opara to the Force Headquarters as Deputy Force Secretary before his present posting. Three days of his posting to the FCT, he was again rejected and redeployed to Delta State not because the IGP wanted it but because he was pressured by Nyesom Wike.
