The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), along with student unions and various civil society organizations, has announced its withdrawal from the mass protest originally scheduled for August 1, 2024.
This decision was revealed by union leaders during town hall meetings held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Dutse, Jigawa State.
The meetings focused on collaborating with key stakeholders to address economic challenges and emphasized the importance of not engaging in actions that could harm the nation.
The unions expressed their belief that the Jigawa State government is making significant efforts to improve the lives of its citizens, asserting that the planned protest lacks justification in the state.
Union representatives highlighted several government initiatives aimed at empowering the community, such as the FADAMA CARES program, which utilizes a fair selection process for beneficiaries, ensuring that thousands of vulnerable individuals receive direct support.
They also noted that the government is actively employing youth, increasing scholarships for students, and ensuring timely payment of salaries and benefits.
Jigawa State’s Commissioner of Police, A.T. Abdullahi, remarked on the state’s reputation for peace and stressed the need to maintain this stability. He cautioned that protests can be exploited by criminal elements seeking to disrupt order, potentially leading to chaos.
He reaffirmed the police’s commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of citizens.
