The ongoing face-off between the Police Service Commission, PSC, and the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, over the recently conducted recruitment exercise for constables into the Force on Wednesday took another dimension as the workers of the Commission under the umbrella of “Joint Union Congress of the Police Service Commission” called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately sack the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Dr Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for rubbishing the exercise.
The Police had on Saturday alleged that the process was marred by corruption and other irregulariti
However addressing news men in Abuja on Wednesday over the claim, the Joint Union Congress of the Commission denied the allegations, described it as false and diversionary abd therefore should be ignor
The Chairman, Joint Union Congress of the Police Service Commission, Comrade Adoyi Augustine Adoyi pointed out that the action of the IGP was against his profession and a calculated attempt to discredit, disorganize and usurp the Commission’s mandate and its powers as confirmed by the Supreme Cou
According to him, “We begin this press conference with a clarion call on the President and Commander in Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately relieve the IGP, Kayode Egbetokun of his appointment as IGP. Our concern comes from the fact that a public officer who misleads the president is causing confusion in the country and may lead to chaos which is antithetical to his duty as a police office
“His attitude has become only a replica of the biblical Haman who in deceiving his principal wanted to wipe out an entire nation but for the tiny intervention of God. So we call on the president to responsibly relieve him of his duties for the following reasons.” r.rtedes reasons.”
Comrade Adoyi also alleged that some elements within the police attempted to smuggle over 1000 names into the recruitment list.
According to him, “We have been furnished with reliable information indicating that elements within the Police Force attempted to smuggle over 1,000 names into the recruitment list. This manipulation was a grave breach of the recruitment process and a calculated attempt to undermine the credibility of the entire exercise.”
Comrade Adoyi described the allegations levelled by the IG against the commission as false, unfounded and spurious.
He said, “The allegations of fraud and several unwholesome acts levelled against the Police Service Commission and its staff are, to say the least, unfounded, spurious, speculative and most irresponsible, especially by the way the allegations were thrown into the public space even before official channel of communication for dealing with such a matter was explored. “
” Shortly after the Commission released the list of successful candidates the Police authority wrote to the Commission to express their objection to the recruitment exercise they were part and parcel of from beginning to the end. This was followed by the removal of the Commission’s Chairman out of clandestine political conspiracy alluding to baseless allegations.
“The third event in quick succession was the Press Release that was out to subject Commission to media trial without exhausting the official channels of communication.
“The allegations of fraud and several other unwholesome acts leveled against the Police Service Commission (PSC) and its staff are to say the least, unfounded, spurious, speculative and most irresponsible especially by the way the allegations were thrown into the public space, even before official channel of communication for dealing with such a matter was exhaustively explored.
” The Police Service Commission and the Nigeria Police Force are both responsible agencies of the Federal Government that should demonstrate integrity to inspire public trust and confidence in the discharge of their respective mandates. The quick and sinister resort to media trial by the police authorities is a subterranean plot to achieve clandestine motive.
“We condemn this action because it is most unwarranted; and we urge the general public to frown at it.
You are all aware of the ongoing face-off orchestrated by the Nigeria Police Force over the just concluded recruitment of qualified Nigerians as Police Constables into the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), a task which is the constitutional and statutory responsibility of the Police Service Commission as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Police Service Commission (Establishment, etc.) Act, 2001 and affirmed by the judgment of the Supreme Court of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
To address the specific allegation of fraud and clarify our position on the matter, we wish to vehemently reject the allegation of fraud by the Nigeria Police authorities in the recruitment exercise. As public servants committed to the due process, we do not take the allegations kindly because we are fully conscious of its implications. We therefore wish to address the allegation directly,” the Union said.
The Union called for a comprehensive phorensic Probe of the list by the Commission and the one being paraded by the Police
The Union further added the Commission employed well-known modern technological platforms to ensure the credibility of the recruitment process.
According to it, ,”This included the use of Cloud Technology, which was necessary to forestall the risk of publishing security personnels’ information in public space as that will amount to dangerous exposure and a breach of the Data Protection Act of 2023. Let us also emphasize the untruth in the allegation of the Police Force that the final list of successful candidates was loaded with names of non-applicants.
” Anyone conversant with information and communication technology, would understand that with the synchronized and computerized system adopted by the Commission it is virtually impossible to flood the list with non-applicants. This is because from the application stage of the exercise to the computing of all results, to examination and release of results in the Cloud using the National Identification Number (NIN), the process was transparent and fool-proof.
” It is infantile to allege that the final list is flooded with non-applicants, especially given the fact that the initial portal used in hosting the entire recruitment exercise was domiciled with the Nigeria Police Force, until the final release of successful candidates on the Commission’s portal in the Cloud. All it takes to appreciate the mischief in the allegation is to compare the list in the initial portal with the NPF with final list on the Commission’s portal.
“It will become immediately clear that all those who made the final list were part of the process from the very beginning of the exercise. It is pertinent to emphasize that it became very necessary to host the final list of successful candidates on the Commission’s portal due to obvious threats of cyber-attack.
It is on record, that this is the recruitment exercise that has faced the highest level of cyber-attacks, plagiarism, fake lists and all sorts of unwholesome activities of fifth columnists, a trend which was aptly identified and derided by the Commission’s Chairman, Dr. Solomon Arase and for which he duly called on the Nigeria Police Force to investigate and deal decisively with in a Press Release, duly signed by the Commission’s spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani, dated 28th May, 2024. We hereby strongly posit that these steps taken by the Commission are germane in ensuring an additional layer of security and authenticity in the recruitment process, which cannot be faulted by any reasonable person or organization, let alone the Nigeria Police Force which was carried along throughout the exercise.”
The Union passed a Vote of Confidence in the immediate past Chairman of the Commission,Dr. Solomon Arase for being the hero of the Commission’s ultimate drive towards independence, for his developmental strides in structural and human capital advancement, for the visibility he had brought to bear on the Commission through unprecedented exposure within his brief period of stewardship.
“We award a mark of excellence upon him for the successful completion of the 2022 Police Constables Recruitment Exercise”.
This came just as the union passed a Vote of No Confidence in the person of Chief Onyemuche Nnamani nominated by the President as the secretary to the Commission, saying that he was unqualified to serve as Secretary to the Commission and urged President Tinubu withdraw his nomination for, amongst other things, being inconsistent with the Police Service Commission (Establishment, etc.) Act, 2001.
