The Federal Government is tightening security on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos to prevent vandalism and protect the public infrastructure. The Federal Ministry of Works is collaborating with the police to enhance surveillance and response on the bridge.
The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, stated that the police have arrested a suspected vandal who was caught removing LED road stud lights on the newly-renovated Third Mainland Bridge. The ministry has written to the police commissioner to increase patrols on the bridge, and police trucks have been stationed there to facilitate quick response to incidents.
The ministry has also replaced iron gratings on manholes with Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) material, which is cheaper and less attractive to thieves. However, the ministry expressed concern over the recent vandalism of newly-installed street lights on the Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The federal controller of works urged the public to regard public infrastructure as their own and report any acts of vandalism to the authorities. She warned that vandals will be dealt with by the police. Construction professionals have also condemned vandalism, stating that it wastes resources, disrupts essential services, and undermines public trust and economic development.
The government has reiterated its commitment to protecting public assets and has called for a collaborative effort between security agencies, local communities, and the general public to build a culture of responsibility and ownership towards national infrastructure.
