Kyari, the former Nigerian police officer entangled in a drug trafficking scandal, recently surfaced in a set of family photographs, accompanied by a notable message on the wall: “Welcome back.” These snapshots emerged online amidst a whirlwind of legal proceedings.

The saga began on February 14, 2022, when Kyari was apprehended by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for his purported involvement with an international drug cartel. Subsequently, he and four members of the Police Intelligence Response Team were arraigned on March 7, 2022. The legal net widened to include two suspected drug traffickers, Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne, seized at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu.

Although Kyari and his team asserted their innocence, Umeibe and Ezenwanne admitted guilt and were convicted. Kyari, however, faced repeated bail rejections until a recent ruling by a Federal High Court in Abuja. On May 22, 2024, Judge Emeka Nwite granted Kyari temporary release to attend his late mother’s burial ceremonies. To secure this bail, Kyari had to surrender his passport and adhere to regular reporting to the NDLEA.

The legal saga continues with a scheduled hearing on Kyari’s primary bail application for the drug trafficking charges on May 31, 2024. Following fulfillment of bail requirements, including reporting to the NDLEA, Kyari was released on Friday evening, as confirmed by Adamu Duza, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service’s Federal Capital Territory Command.
