Crime watch news reports that the Upper Area Court in Kubwa, Abuja, granted Modupe's request and dissolved her marriage to Ismaila according to Islamic law. The Presiding Judge, Mohammed Wakili, ordered Modupe to observe the "Iddah" waiting period of three months before she can contract another marriage.
Modupe, a mother of three children aged 17, 15, and 12, told the Court that she got married to Ismaila under Islamic law on 24th October, 2007. She said that on 17th June, 2023, Ismaila sent her out of his house, and they have been living apart since then after she told him about a traditional title she wanted to receive.
Ismaila told the Court that he sent his wife packing because she decided to receive a title in Jiwa, which he did not approve of. However, Modupe explained that her husband had initially supported the idea of her receiving the title, but later changed his mind on the day of the ceremony.
Modupe also told the Court that her husband threatened her life, which is why she left his house. Ismaila told the Court that he had not been able to settle with his wife and that if she insists on a divorce, he cannot force her to stay.
The Court ultimately dissolved the marriage and ordered the parties to go their separate ways for the interest of peace.
