The chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Olanipekun Olukoyede, has recounted a concerning incident involving a 17-year-old internet fraudster who hacked into his personal banking details using his mobile number.
On May 2, Olukoyede shared the details of this incident. He explained that the young boy, who was studying history at the 200 level, was apprehended by EFCC operatives and brought in for interrogation. To test the boy's IT skills, Olukoyede asked him to demonstrate how he scams people's money through the internet.
The EFCC chairman revealed that the boy, without any background in the sciences, was able to obtain Olukoyede's mobile number, access his Bank Verification Number (BVN), and even provide the details of his bank account. Olukoyede expressed his amazement at the sophisticated technological abilities of the young fraudster.
Despite the criminal nature of the boy's actions, Olukoyede sees potential in his skills. The EFCC chairman believes that with proper guidance and orientation, the young man could become a valuable national assets.
The incident highlights the growing threat of cybercrime in Nigeria. According to the EFCC, Nigerian banks have suffered a loss of ₦8 billion due to cybercrimes, and the country as a whole loses an estimated $500 million annually to these illegal activities.
