A 43-year old man, Akeem Tunde, may spend the rest of his life in prison custody for allegedly engaging and beating a 52-year old woman, Modester Ozioko, to death during a public brawl in Lagos State.
Crimewatchnewspaper reports that the incident happened at Olaiya Bus Stop, Iba area of Lagos.
The suspect, Tunde, has been arrested and charged for murder, which attracts life imprisonment.
According to the Police, the suspect, Tunde, had a disagreement with the deceased over an undisclosed matter, which led to exchange of hot words between them.
The disagreement later degenerated to a physical fight and in the process, Tunde gave her fist blows severally and she slumped as she became unconscious because of the weight of Tunde’s punches.
She was rushed to an undisclosed hospital but before the doctor would attend to her, she was already dead and was certified dead by the doctor. Her corpse was then deposited at the mortuary for autopsy reports.
The matter was reported to the Police at Iba Division and Tunde was arrested. He was later transferred to the SCID at Yaba for further investigation over the alleged murder.
After rounds of interrogation, the Police found him culpable and consequently charged him before the Ebute Metta Magistrate Court for the alleged murder.
The Court did not take his plea when he was arraigned following a motion moved by the prosecutor asking the Court to refer the matter to the DPP for legal advice because of the nature of the offence allegedly committed.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Adedayo Kafayat Tella, ordered his remand in custody at the correctional centre pending the outcome of the DPP’s advice and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send it to the DPP.
The matter was adjourned for mention for the report of the DPP’s advice to be made available, which will determine if the matter will be transferred to the High Court or not over jurisdiction.
