Last Tuesday, the Federal Ministry of Education announced the suspension of the evaluation and accreditation process for degree certificates from the Republic of Benin and Togo on behalf of the Federal Government.

The ministry has stated that its choice was based on the covert investigation carried out by a Nigerian publication, which revealed the operations of a fraudulent institution issuing fake degrees in Cotonou, a significant urban center in Benin Republic.

Based on the inquiry, the investigative journalist obtained a certificate from Cotonou University in just six weeks and additionally took part in the obligatory one-year program administered by the National Youth Service Corps.

The National Universities Commission, which is the governing body for universities in Nigeria, has restated its dedication to eliminating counterfeit universities within the country.

Crimewatchnewspaper  has utilized information from the NUC website to compile a list of universities in the country that are currently being investigated as part of the continuous endeavors to eliminate institutions that issue counterfeit certificates.

The NUC has also issued a warning on its website, emphasizing that anyone who attends or obtains a certificate from these unauthorized institutions does so at their own peril.

"Certificates acquired from these origins will not be acknowledged for NYSC enrollment, job opportunities, and advanced education.

Additionally, the appropriate law enforcement entities have been informed to take the necessary measures."

In 2022, Adamu Adamu, a former minister of education, expressed concern about the persistence of illegal universities in Nigeria and emphasized the government's commitment to take strong measures against them to ensure the quality of education. The NUC has identified 58 illicit universities in operation within the nation thus far.
