The Nigerian Police have commented on the illegality of same-sex marriage in the nation.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has restated that engaging in same-sex marriage is considered an unnatural act in Nigeria and continues to be against the law.

After a viral video emerged on social media, showing individuals claiming to be queer actively participating in and promoting behaviors that are considered unnatural under Nigerian laws, the situation described above unfolded.

Force PRO, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, responded to the development by stating that under the Nigerian Criminal Code Act that is applicable in Southern States, unnatural acts are prohibited.   Sections 214 to 217 specifically criminalize acts that are deemed unnatural, such as engaging in sexual acts with a person against the order of nature or with an animal.   Those who are found guilty may face legal repercussions as stated by the law.

This is also reiterated in Section 284 of the Nigerian Penal Code, which is applicable in the Northern region of the country.    "Likewise, it is crucial to acknowledge that Nigeria strictly forbids same-sex marriage.   The enactment of the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014 renders the celebration, practice, and public demonstration of same-sex marriages illegal."

"We stress the significance of comprehending and abiding by these laws, as any breach will be subjected to appropriate legal procedures.   Our commitment towards upholding law and order remains unwavering, urging all individuals to promptly report any suspicious behaviors associated with unnatural acts or same-sex unions, thus providing vital details to support our endeavors in law enforcement."

"We must come together to resist such acts, while also encouraging parents and guardians to be aware and assist the Police in combating these inhumane actions that are unfamiliar to our culture and also subject to legal consequences."
