Owohunwa, who paid a visit to the Unit on Friday as part of his supervision of police installations, made the decision to inspect the cell in order to assess the number of detainees and their well-being.
ASP Aminat Mayegun, the spokesperson for the department, released a statement on Friday containing this information.
However, the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) expressed discomfort with the duration certain suspects had spent in the SFU Cell after engaging with them.
"Promotion." Consequently, he warned the Unit's Commissioner of Police about the importance of not surpassing the duration of detention.
Owohunwa highlighted the significance of regularly monitoring the cell in order to avoid instances of custodial violence. "He emphasized the importance of upholding the rights of individuals under arrest."
"The purpose of the AIG's visit was to remind officers about the importance of upholding the dignity of detainees and respecting their basic rights."
Owohunwa encouraged all department leaders to adopt a proactive strategy, regularly inspecting the facility under their jurisdiction, in order to guarantee fairness and respect for human rights.
