President Tinubu has given his endorsement to the acquisition of digital tracking devices for security agencies in order to combat kidnappings.

Barrister Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), announced that President Bola Tinubu has given his authorization for the urgent acquisition of digital tracking devices aimed at reducing kidnappings.

During a press conference in Abuja, Wike revealed that the individuals who were recently captured by security agencies in the region are assisting and offering useful information, without providing further specifics.

He stated that the apprehension of certain kidnappers, who were later presented by law enforcement authorities, was made possible due to the intelligence gathered from the suspects.

Wike claimed that the security forces effectively prevented further attacks and highlighted that the government is taking proactive measures to tackle the situation.

Wike expressed confidence that the situation would improve as he acknowledged the previous shortage of suitable equipment.

He attributed this positive outlook to the president's authorization for emergency procurement. He pointed out that security agencies lack necessary facilities and vehicles, and stressed the need for specialized tracking equipment to effectively reduce crime.

Wike shared his firsthand account as the Governor of Rivers State, highlighting how obtaining specific equipment played a crucial role in the decrease of criminal activities.

He mentioned that they have identified the specific requirements of each agency and will now supply the necessary equipment, as they have received the president's approval for emergency procurement. Wike acknowledged the challenge of ensuring security in remote areas and proposed the acquisition of motorcycles as a means to access hard-to-reach places.

He highlighted that security goes beyond just equipment and includes the need to motivate staff. He refrained from sharing detailed strategies because the topic of security is sensitive. Wike explained that, in terms of setting up a security agency, the Administration cannot form its own security force like other regional entities. However, the FCTA will establish a Joint Task Force that will have a comprehensive command and control structure. This force will be adequately equipped to address security emergencies.

Wike recognized the endeavors of security authorities in apprehending individuals who provide information, and guaranteed the public that all necessary measures are being taken to safeguard both people and possessions. He concluded by emphasizing the importance of establishing a unified security team that possesses its own organization and equipment, guaranteeing a synchronized reaction during emergencies. However, he acknowledged that this undertaking would require financial investment and time.
