The Interior Minister, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, will be launching Nigeria's first-ever online passport application portal on Monday, January 8, 2024, in Abuja.
On Friday, the minister conducted a demonstration of the internet platform together with Mrs. Caroline Wura-Ola Adepoju, the Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service.
The demo session was attended by various important stakeholders and development partners.
The session provided a chance to showcase and evaluate the automated passport application process, with the inclusion of constructive feedback to ensure the system is improved and enhanced.
A portal for applying for passports online has been created specifically for individuals from Nigeria, as well as those living outside the country.
There are two different categories of passports available for both Nigerian citizens and those in the diaspora.
Nigerian individuals who wish to obtain passports that are valid for a period of 5 years, containing 32 pages, are required to pay an amount of #25,000.
On the other hand, those who opt for passports with a validity of 10 years, consisting of 64 pages, need to pay #70,000.
In the meantime, international applicants who wish to obtain passports valid for 5 years and containing 32 pages will be charged a fee of $130.
Similarly, applicants who prefer passports valid for 10 years with 64 pages will need to pay $230. The process of applying for these passports can be done through the website https//passport.immigration.gov.ng.
Prominent individuals who took part in the demonstration session for the online passport application consisted of Honorable Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM); Stephen Matete, the representative from the International Organization for Migration (IOM); and the Country Manager at Development Alternatives Incorporated, among others.
Dr. Joe Abah, who is the creator of the Kwandala Foundation, Tijjani Mohammad Musa, and David Afolayan, who is one of the co-founders of Technext, are all notable individuals.
Other individuals include Akintunde Babatunde, who holds the position of Director of Programmes at the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development, Lanre Lasisi, a journalist and Community Development Practitioner, Samson Itodo, the Founder of Yiaga Africa, Adeyemi Adewoye, the representative of Good Governance Advocate, and Mukhtar Mudibbo, the representative of Connected Development (CODE), among many others.
