In the course of two weeks, a total of 139 individuals have been apprehended, while 154 victims who were previously abducted have been successfully freed.
Furthermore, law enforcement has managed to seize 17 firearms and confiscate 604 rounds of ammunition.
The security system in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has been strengthened with the establishment of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM. As a result, 139 individuals have been apprehended, and a significant amount of weapons and ammunition have been seized, including 3 GPR Chargers, 2 AK-47 rifles, 1 Type-06, 4 locally made guns, 1 Berretta pistol, 2 Makarov pistols, and 4 locally made pump action guns.
Additionally, 504 pieces of AK-47 ammunition and 100 pieces of AA ammunition have been recovered. The intervention also led to the successful rescue of 154 kidnapped victims who were unharmed. One recent achievement worth mentioning is the capture of a group of individuals on the Abuja-Kaduna expressway who were significant providers of weapons and bul
lets to criminal gangs operating in Niger, Zamfara, and Kaduna States. In a more recent incident, on the early morning of Friday, January 26th, 2024, officers from the IGP-SIS engaged in a fierce gunfight with armed bandits in the FCT-Kaduna area, resulting in the neutralization of three of them, including their leader known as Mai-Gemu (also known as Gadoro). It is evident that this operation has effectively dismantled the gang and their hideout.
Furthermore, on January 21st, 2024, the IGP-SIS operatives apprehended two key figures involved in the illegal trade of locally manufactured firearms and various types of ammunition, supplying them to multiple attackers in the North-Central region. Additionally, the squad successfully arrested two kidnappers in the Jikwoyi locality of the FCT, seizing a substantial amount of weapons and bullets from them after overpowering the gang in a gunfight, which also resulted in the safe rescue of their kidnapped victim.
The Inspector-General of Police has emphasized that the launch of the Special Intelligence Squad (SIS) will extend beyond the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to other states in order to improve security management throughout the country. In addition, the Inspector-General has instructed the strategic deployment of numerous IGP-SIS personnel to areas within the FCT that are still facing security challenges. Their mission is to combat all types of criminal activity that may arise.
